Selma: Movie Screening

The Cuyamaca College History Department, Student Affairs and the Associated Student government are sponsoring a free showing and discussion of the movie, "Selma," 11:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9 , in the theater, Building B, as a College Hour event in commemoration of Black History Month. 

Presented by Cuyamaca College history instructor Moriah Gonzalez Meeks, the event is open to the public. 

Directed by Ava DuVernay, the 2015 Paramount Pictures drama starring David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr., is set during the height of the American civil rights movement. The movie produced by Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey depicts the marches from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol of Montgomery to secure voting rights for the black community. 

The following events are planned by the college to commemorate Black History Month:

  • Through Feb. 29: A library display on the first and second floors 
  • Feb. 9: Movie screening of "Selma," followed by discussion at 11:30-2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Theater, Building B
  • Feb. 17: A workshop presented by Dr. Tanis Starck, San Diego State University, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. inn the Cross Cultural Center (Student Center, I-128) The workshop is titled, "And Her Name was Katrina: Life After the Storm, a personal guide through a reflective journey of social justice and inequality in America.
  • Feb. 18: Celebratiing Black Excellence: Stop by the Cross Cultural Center (Student Center, I-128) to participate in various activities sponsored by the Associated Student Government from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. 
  • Feb. 25: Introduction to the Black Student Union of Cuyamaca College from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the Grand Lawn. Learn about the Black Student Union of Cuyamaca College, community organizations, black businesses, and hear from local speakers. Free food will be provided at the event.
  • Feb. 26: Paving the Way – A look back on the sacrifices and contributions that have been made which have paved the way for many African-Americans, from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theater. Directed by Robert Chambers and hosted by Chambers and Sakeenah Gallardo. Cost is $8, general admission; $5 for students with identification cards.

All events are free and open to the public.
