Afro-Cuban Master Dance Class

Grossmont College's Dance Department's Master Dance Class Series  is offering an Afro-Cuban dance class taught by master instructor Juan Carlos Blanco from Omo Ache Cuban culture from 1:45-3 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the college's dance studio in Room 24-271. 

Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Blanco started his performance career as a youth with the folkloric arts groups Cumballe and Oba Ilú in his home town of Guanabacoa. He later joined one of Cuba's most renowned folkloric companies, Raices Profundas (Deep Roots), directed by Juan De Dios Ramos Morejon. He spent nine years with Raices Profundas, becoming th llead male dancer and soloist, and toured Latin America and Asia.  Since coming to the United States, Blanco has been featured in various Afro-Cuban productions in the California area as dancer and guest choreographer for groups such as Olorun, Alafia, and Taifa.  In 1998 he founded the San Diego-based Afro-Cuban folkloric ensemble, Omo Aché, which performs in schools, universities, and multicultural venues throughout California.  Blanco has taught Afro-Cuban percussion and dance to adults through community classes, colleges and universities and has traveled throughout the United States teaching master workshops.

At Grossmont College register for master dance classes with your dance instructor or call (619) 644-7766. The fee is $10 or $18 for two classes on the same day. The master class series is open to all dance students, including those not from Grossmont College.
