Our Classified Senate was established in 1992. The Classified Senate organization exists to help the classified employee participate in decision-making (shared-governance). Participatory governance means that all 'stake-holders' (faculty, students, staff, administrators...) have an opportunity to understand and contribute voice regarding the health of the campuses/district system. To do that,  staff participate effectively on committees and councils. Committee meetings are important vehicles for budget decisions, policies and procedures, among other issues.  The Classified Senate ensures that participation (voice), communication, and clarification is provided for our colleagues.

Staff are the first and last line of operations of a community college; the mechanism that keep our community colleges working smoothly for students, faculty, and the community. With years of combined experience and training, this resource can only be utilized properly by active input in the participatory governance process.

The Classified Senate will help all staff become familiar and comfortable with the organizational governance structure at the district, understand the decision-making process, government/education code, and other laws that affect the way that classified staff interface with, and support, our institution and educational community. More information about Classified Senate, SB235 and statewide position papers can be found on the California Community College Classified Senate Website at http://www.ccccs.org/

The GCCCD Classified Senate hold annual elections during the month of June with nominations opened during May of each year. Offices are held from July 1st through June 30th with a maximum of five (5) consecutive `term of office'. Vacant positions and/or positions vacated during the year may be filled by nominations presented at an E-board meeting and voted upon by the E-board.
