The Spirit of the Garden, an open-air concert celebrating gardens and nature with the New York-based quartet, Rose & the Nightingale, is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at the Water Conservation Garden, 12122 Cuyamaca College Drive West, on the campus of Cuyamaca College in El Cajon. Through poetry and song, the all-female quartet of world-class improvising vocalists and instrumentalists celebrates the role of botanical gardens as contemplative spaces. The music is a genre-defying mix of world music, folk, and jazz improvisation. Rose and the Nightingale features Jody Redhage (cello, vocals and compositions); Sara Caswell (violin and mandolin); Katelyn Benton (piano and vocals); and Leala Cyr (vocals, trumpet and percussion.)The works of American poets Maria Brady Smith, Ella Cvancara, Wyn Cooper, and Silvi Alcivar, as well as Miquel Decor of southern France and 13th century Persian poet Rumi will be featured.
Rose & Nightingale's live performances are noted for their fiery rhythmic energy, sublime harmonies, and lyrical beauty. Members have performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall and Chicago Symphony Hall, and at the world' most prestigious jazz festivals, including the North Sea, Montreal, Montreux, New Port, San Franciso, and Tokyo's Blue Note.
The garden opens at 6 p.m. on the day of the concert.
