COMMENTS

Minor injuries can be handled by basic first aid procedures and do not require immediate additional medical treatment or transportation. Serious, non-life threatening injuries require immediate medical attention (beyond first aid) which is provided on site. These injuries do not require ambulance transportation. Life threatening injuries require immediate ambulance transportation to a medical facility. This may include individuals with chest pains, breathing difficulties, severe bone breaks, severe back injuries, severe cuts with uncontrollable bleeding, unconscious persons, or severe head injuries. In all but the most extreme cases, Health Services personnel should determine whether or not an ambulance and/or Emergency Medical Technician Services are required.

Deaths due accidents or homicide fall under the jurisdiction of the appropriate law enforcement agency. In either case, notify the Department of Public Safety and Public Information immediately. Witnesses must stay in the area until cleared to leave by the attending Police Officer or Sheriff's Deputy.

For further information, see District Operating Procedure EM15, Mental Health Emergencies, or the GCCCD Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.

If blood or any other body fluid is present, use extreme caution to avoid contaminating yourself or others.  Use the rubber gloves that are provided in the First Aid kits.  Ensure that the incident is logged and reported as required in the District Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.  Contact Risk Management as soon as possible at Grossmont College extension 7711.

2

Faculty, Staff and Students

Report all Injuries / Serious Illness

All injuries to both students and employees should be reported as soon as possible to the college Health Office in order to:

  • Allow the nurse to evaluate the injury or illness and treat if appropriate
  • Allow the nurse to refer the injured/ill person to appropriate medical facilities if required
  • Allow students to access the student medical insurance policy if appropriate

In all but the most extreme cases, call Health Services so that they can evaluate the situation to determine if an ambulance and/or Emergency Medical Technician Services are required.  This will prevent unnecessary and costly charges to the inured/ill person.

STEP

TASK PERFORMED BY

DESCRIPTION

1

Faculty, Staff and Students

Invoke First Aid/CPR Guidelines

If CPR is started on a person who is not breathing, it must be continued until the victim is either declared dead by a medical professional or the attending caregiver is replaced or relieved by a CPR-qualified individual.  In most cases, a death declaration will not be made on site; the victim will be transported to the nearest hospital where a physician will make the determination.

Deaths due to accidents or homicide fall under the jurisdiction of the appropriate law enforcement agency.  In either case, notify the Department of Public Safety and Public Information immediately.  Witnesses must stay in the area until cleared to leave by the attending Police Officer or Sheriff's Deputy.

2

Department of Public Safety

Notify Police/Sheriff and Secure the Area

Notify either the El Cajon Police or the San Diego Sheriffs Office as appropriate.   Secure the crime or accident scene.  Ensure that witnesses to the crime or accident remain in the area until after the Police/Sheriff have stated that they are authorized to leave.
