October shows at Hyde Gallery

October 01, 2018 - November 05, 2018

Grossmont College Hyde Gallery, Building 25

The Hyde Art Gallery is presenting partly concurrent exhibitions of two San Diego artists, painter Gloria Muriel and ceramicist Cheryl Tall, Oct. 1-Nov. 6, in Building 25 at Grossmont College.  A native of Mexico, Muriel is known for her transcendental and meditative painting practice. Sometimes using the pseudonym “Glow”, Muriel derives her imagery from various mythologies to create stark portraits of wide-eyed figures floating in vibrant, organically-rendered environments.

Muriel, whose exhibit, Respira, is on display Oct. 1- 26 in conjunction with Latinx Heritage Month, has produced work for several causes including Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans and the Canyonlands Auburn Creek cleanup project. Her murals and collaborative street art installations can be found throughout the U.S. and Mexico.

On Saturday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Muriel will collaborate with the art department’s public art class to create a large mural in the 200 Fine Arts Quad. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, Muriel will give an artist’s talk from 2:30-3:30 in Room 24-274.

Cheryl Tall’s art, Cirque de Luna, is on display Oct. 11-Nov. 6, and consists of large, intricate ceramic pieces that unite architectural and figurative imagery. Animals and edifices crown her symbolically adorned, life-sized forms inspired by craft and folk art. Tall explores themes of domesticity, romance, and nostalgia, juxtaposing her affinity for objects of antiquity with references to modern popular culture.

Born in New Jersey, Tall currently works and resides in Encinitas. Her art has been exhibited internationally at galleries, is in several museum collections, and featured in more than 24 publications.

A joint artists’ reception will be held 4-7 p.m. Oct. 16 with refreshments and a live musical performance by guitarist Jordan DeHass.

All Hyde Art Gallery exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.

Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays by appointment only. Visitors are required to purchase a $2 one-day parking permit at a vending machine located in any parking lot.  For the evening of the opening receptions, Complimentary parking passes are available for the artists’ reception by entering code 2577 into any machine.
