Cuyamaca College’s Cultural Competency Student Institute, a series of workshops led by Tanis Starck with San Diego State University’s College of Education, is set to start Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the Cross Cultural Center, Room I-128. The five workshops taking place Wednesdays through the month of April are designed to prepare students to be successful in culturally diverse settings. Topics covered include gaining a deeper understanding of other cultures’ backgrounds, learning to interact with people of diverse backgrounds, understanding the importance of relationship-building in promoting diversity, applying principles of cultural competency to personal professional, or academic life, and more.

SDSU’s Stark, who created the first Cultural Competency Certificate Program in the California State University system, is a doctoral graduate of Howard University and a certified psychologist.

Students who have attended three workshops during the 2015-16 school year will be invited to a student leadership reception.

The workshops are from 1-2 p.m. on Feb. 24, March 9 and 30, and April 13 and 27.

For additional information, contact Lauren Vaknin in the Student Affairs Office at (619) 660-4295.

The workshops are free and open to the public.
