Art of Resilience at Grossmont College

May 23, 2017

05:30 PM - 08:30 PM

Grossmont College Griffin Gate, Building 60

The Grossmont College Dream Center and Dreamers Movement Club are presenting “The Art of Resilience: Overcoming the Dream,” an evening of art, spoken word, food, music and danza, or dance, to raise scholarship funds for undocumented students 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Griffin Gate, Bldg. 60.

In addition to raising funds, the event is intended to provide a safe space for undocumented, DACA and AB540 students to share their authentic stories. The free event is open to the public.

Often referred to as “Dreamers,” the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals students were, under the previous administration, protected from deportation as a result of the DACA program, which allowed certain undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as minors, to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit. Assembly Bill 540 was signed into law in 2001, creating an exemption from non-resident college tuition for certain non-resident students who have attended high school in the state and who have received a high school diploma.

The May 23 event will be a family-friendly event with an art auction to raise funds and to provide an opportunity for faculty, staff and the community to show their support for undocumented students at Grossmont College and to celebrate their resiliency.
