Speaker panels, a poetry reading, and presentations, including one on the nation’s first Black vice president, are among February’s Black History Month events presented by Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges.
A diverse selection of events is being offered at both colleges to honor the traditions, legacies and contributions of Black Americans. All events are free and presented virtually.
Grossmont College’s events are accessible by will be available for live-stream viewing on the Grossmont College YouTube channel and Cuyamaca College’s events are available on the Student Affairs website.
GROSSMONT COLLEGE BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS:
The Day in the Life: Black Women and Men Working in STEM Fields and How to Gain More Representation in These Fields
Special guest panel or Black professionals working within the STEM fields (Taneisha Hellon)
CUYAMACA COLLEGE BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS:
A multimedia presentation and poetry reading evaluating the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on modern American civil liberties in the 21st century. Viewers will participate in an interactive workshop dissecting equity, equality and multiculturalism. Selections included from Faraji’s Amazon Best Selling anthology, “Calabama,” published through World Stage Press. (Yaa Faraji)
Buffalo Soldiers and Insurrectos: African American Soldiers, Race, & the Philippine American War
This workshop will center on African American soldiers against a backdrop of war and white supremacy. Discussion will focus on intersections of racism and imperialism. Special emphasis will be given to trying to understand the role of marginalized and oppressed African American soldiers as they are sent to fight racialized 'enemies' in the Philippine American War and other US military actions and interventions.
