El Cajon, CA – Over the summer, the Grossmont- Cuyamaca Community College District welcomed two new student trustees for the 2025-2026 academic year. Lu Tri “Vi” Huynh was elected to represent Grossmont College, and Marcelia Y. Villaseñor will represent Cuyamaca College. Elected by their peers, these students represent the vibrantly diverse communities of each campus. Student trustees attend and participate in monthly Governing Board meetings, vote on important districtwide discussions, and engage in statewide advocacy on behalf of their fellow students.

Lu Tri “Vi” Huynh, a computer science major at Grossmont College is serving concurrently as the President of the Associated Students of Grossmont College (ASGC) for the 2025-2026 year. Previously, he held the position of ASGC Executive Vice President for 2024-2025, where he actively revitalized student clubs and strengthened the Inter-Club Council. Vi seeks to create a vibrant campus environment that empowers students academically and socially.

Vi stated that he chose to attend Grossmont College because of its ideal location. Then, he fell in love with the Grossmont College community. As he steps into his student trustee role, Vi expressed excitement for a chance to learn more about the decision-making processes that shape the community college experience. He hopes to improve his ability to listen and communicate effectively with students and employees. One of his goals is to strengthen his network and practice thinking outside the box.

Vi indicated that he felt the biggest challenge facing this generation of students is that since the COVID-19 pandemic, campus engagement has not yet fully recovered. He felt that this has resulted in the loss of campus support programs, reduction in cafeteria hours, and a perceived drop in demand for tutoring.  He emphasized that these things draw people to campus, and losing them has disincentivized students from participating fully in campus life. Finally, Vi noted that Grossmont College now offers an Associate of Science, and Certificate of Achievement for Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI). He looks forward to this program expanding and creating opportunities for students to keep up with emerging technologies.

Marcelia Y. Villaseñor is studying Physics at Cuyamaca College. Growing up in rural San Diego fueled her passion for advocacy and social justice. Marcelia focuses on creating spaces where people can feel safe, supported, and validated. She looks forward to giving back to her community, and being someone who her peers can rely on. Marcelia chose Cuyamaca College in part because of the strong family connection. Her mother and siblings also attended the college. In a touching show of support, Marcelia’s mother was in the audience for the student trustee oath administration ceremony. It was a full-circle moment, celebrating the multi-generational legacy they are building at Cuyamaca College—an inspiring milestone for their family.

Marcelia states that access to higher education is limited in rural San Diego, and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District continues to create pathways to higher education for those underserved communities. She is most excited to be a part of the process of helping the Cuyamaca College community grow and thrive. Marcelia believes that students and employees are working to rebuild engagement and expand access to resources, and she is proud and excited to continue the momentum.

As a physics major, Marcelia emphasized the value of mentorships, which deepened her interest in the field, and helped shape her academic goals. She expressed uncertainty about the changes to curriculum, and worried that a loss of federal funding might impact the stable, supportive, and vital campus life. She loves the diversity at Cuyamaca College, highlighting that classroom diversity includes age as well as cultural backgrounds.
