CVC Exchange and Cross-Enrollment

What is the CVC Exchange?

The California Virtual Campus (CVC) Exchange is a cross-enrollment system that enables students to easily find and instantly register for fully accredited online courses offered by any participating California Community College, without having to submit another application there.

Cross-enrollment is a collaborative effort that allows more students to complete their educational goals sooner by increasing access and enabling students to take up to two fully online courses per term through CVC outside of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.

Students must also be enrolled at their Home College, which for the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District is either Grossmont College or Cuyamaca College.

Cross-Enrollment Workflow image: Student takes one course at Home College. Student can enroll in up to two courses at Teaching Colleges.

What is the Home College and Teaching College?

Home College - the local college where the student is currently enrolled at the time of registration.  This is also the college where the students set up an Educational Plan, financial aid, counseling, VETS and EOPS support.

Teaching College - the college where the student cross-enrolls and takes the course(s) via the CVC exchange program.  This college is different than your Home College.  Grossmont College and Cuyamaca College are both Teaching Colleges, which allows for cross-enrollment for students from other California community colleges.

Are All Classes Taken in the CVC Exchange Transferable?

Students are encouraged to meet with their counselors to ensure any classes taken outside of their Home College will not impact their acceptance at transfer institutions.

Students using the CVC Exchange must consent to have their transcripts automatically shared at the end of the term from the Teaching College to the Home College.

At the time of enrollment, the student agrees to the CVC Exchange informed consent statement, which specifies that a student must consent to having their Teaching College's transcripts automatically shared with the Home College.

This consent acts as the request for a Teaching College transcript for any classes taken through the CVC Exchange to be shared with the Home College.

Note:  If a student is transferring to another institution, they will need to request an official transcript directly from the Teaching College through the college's transcript request process.

Grossmont College and Cuyamaca College are both a Home College and Teaching College, which means all fully online courses that do not require any on-campus meetings, exams or materials fees will automatically be made available through the CVC Exchange for cross-enrollment (instant enrollment by students from other participating California community colleges at GCCCD).

By participating in the CVC Exchange, there is increased access for students, the potential for higher enrollment in your courses and less chances that courses are canceled.  In addition, students should also be able to earn certificates and degrees faster.

No, CVC Exchange students will be able to enroll during open enrollment.

Step 1 - Students sign into cvc.edu.

Step 2 - Students identify their Home College.

Step 3 - Students search for courses sorted by category (CSU, IGETC, Cal-GETC, home college course name, keyword, or topic).

  • Courses marked Add course are eligible for instant enrollment at cvc.edu.
  • Courses marked Apply Now are not eligible for instant cross-enrollment, but students may still enroll by filling out an application via CCC Apply.

The determination whether a course is eligible for instant enrollment depends on if the student is enrolled in a Home College and is registering for a course in a Teaching College.

No, having CVC Exchange Students in your courses should not impact how you teach and faculty will not be able to differentiate CVC Exchange students from GCCCD students in their classes.
