Hazardous Waste
Hazardous Waste
Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) defines hazardous waste as waste with properties that make it potentially dangerous or harmful to human health or the environment. The universe of hazardous wastes is large and diverse. Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, or contained gases. They can be the by-products of manufacturing processes, discarded used materials, or discarded unused commercial products such as cleaning fluids (solvents) or pesticides.
In California, the individual generating the waste must determine if the waste generated meets the criteria of hazardous waste as defined in 22 CCR section 66261.3. The hazardous waste is classified as either being subject to RCRA, found in 40 CFR, or it is subject to HSC and 22 CCR. The hazardous waste categories include:
- Acutely hazardous waste
- Extremely hazardous waste
- Non-RCRA hazardous waste
- RCRA hazardous waste
- Special waste
- Universal waste
